Clamps Case Study: Optimizing Parts For Function And Cost At NBG Technologies
At NBG Technologies, everything we do is with the customer in mind. If a part can be made better, we provide suggestions to improve quality and functionality. Whether you need complex manufacturing solutions or simple design advice, our team is here to help.
We have learned that not every part has to be revolutionary to make a big impact. Small, simple changes can greatly improve the quality, function, aesthetics, turnaround time, and cost-effectiveness of a piece. Here’s a look at one project where we improved upon an existing part, and how our process keeps the customer’s best interest at the forefront of our metal fabrication services.
The Problem Part
A customer came to us with a mailbox part and said they needed more fabricated the same way. The part served a safety purpose: if a car collided with the mailbox, it would help the mailbox fall away from the vehicle rather than into it.
The original part the customer brought to us was not ideal. We immediately noted that both the look and function of the part could be improved. The existing design used laser cutting, bending, tapping, and welding—a process that was extensive and time-consuming. We knew we could simplify the manufacturing process and improve quality with just a few smart adjustments. This mindset reflects our company’s broader approach to growth and responsibility.
Crafting a Smarter Solution
NBG Technologies CEO, Eleazar Garza, had a simple solution to make the part better in every way: a PEM nut. This eliminated the need for welding and created a cleaner, more efficient design while maintaining the same thread as the original part.
Communication was key throughout the process. We maintained open, back-and-forth discussions with the customer to ensure our suggestions aligned with their needs. That collaboration built trust and ensured a successful outcome.
Both the original and new parts were made from 11-gauge cold-rolled steel and finished with a black powder coat. The new part required no plate, no extra hole, no tapping, and no welding—just one PEM nut pressed with our hardware machine. Such a simple solution made a world of difference in looks, cost, manufacturing time, and most importantly, function. The customer was extremely happy with the solutions we provided.
From Complicated To Clean
Improved Powder-Coating Outcomes
Our powder-coating vendor had an easier time when given the new part. Because the new part had a cleaner design, the paint was able to attach better, and less paint chipped off. This was especially important because the mailbox parts are kept outside and exposed metal is susceptible to corrosion, so it is essential to manufacture the parts in a way that ensures they will remain in good condition.
Simpler Installation
Even the installation of the new part was easier and faster. The original part featured an unaligned plate that did not always match up with the mailbox during installation. Because the new part was much cleaner, the alignment was centered, and the parts could be installed in mailboxes more easily, quickly, and effectively.
With the new design, you can take a drill and put a bolt in and out of it as many times as you want, and the PEM nut will stay there. The previously welded piece on the original part did not last as well through the installation process.
No matter how simple or complex your parts are, our Texas manufacturing company can provide solutions and suggestions to ensure you are satisfied with the results.
Small Changes, Big Impact
If you have parts that are not being manufactured in the most efficient way, we would love to help with your project at NBG Technologies. The customer seeking out the clamps we outlined above was extremely satisfied with the results and noted how much easier their job was after our suggestions.
Our advice helped our customer save money and time, made installation easier, simplified the powder coating process, and improved both the functionality and look of the part.
